How Much Firewood Do I Need for Winter in Jersey?

One of the most common questions we get asked is simple but surprisingly tricky to answer: how much firewood do you actually need to get through a Jersey winter? Run out too early and you're stuck mid-cold-snap searching for emergency firewood delivery. Order too much and you've tied up money in logs you won't burn until next year or don’t have room to store them. Here's a proper breakdown to help you order the right amount, first time.

It depends on how you use your fire

Before any numbers, the honest answer is "it depends" — specifically on three things:

  1. How often you light a fire — every evening through winter, or just occasional weekends?
  2. What you're heating — is your log burner your main heat source, or just supplementary alongside central heating?
  3. The size of your burner and room — a large stove heating an open-plan space burns through logs much faster than a small stove in one room

Rough guide for Jersey homes

As a general starting point for Jersey's climate (roughly October to March, mild but damp winters):

  • Occasional use (weekends/evenings only, 2-3 times a week): around 1-2m³ for the season - 20-40 nets
  • Regular use (most evenings, main room heating): around 2-4m³ for the season - 40-80 nets
  • Daily/all-day use (log burner as primary heat source): 4-6m³+ for the season - 80-120+ nets

These figures assume using a log burner (not open fire) & with kiln dried logs under 20% moisture — if you're burning wetter, less efficient wood, you'll need noticeably more to get the same heat output, which is exactly why kiln dried is more economical even at a slightly higher price point.

A simple way to check your own usage

If you used firewood last winter, the easiest way to estimate this year is to look back at how many nets or bags you actually got through or if you bought from us just ask. If you're new to a log burner or new to Jersey, start with a mid-range estimate (2-3m³) and top up through the season — much easier than running out completely in January, but we’ll always have stock!

Why ordering your full winter supply at once makes sense

Buying your whole season's logs in one bulk order rather than topping up bag by bag has real advantages:

  • Better value — bulk pricing per cubic metre works out cheaper than buying small amounts repeatedly
  • No running out — nothing worse than discovering you're empty on the coldest night of the year
  • One delivery, sorted — stacked where you want it, done for the season - if you don't have storage we can store for you
  • Locked in pricing — order now and you're protected from any price rises later in the season, world events are totally out of our control

What about trade and commercial use?

If you're a pub, restaurant, hotel or holiday let in Jersey with an open fire, wood burner or pizza oven, the same principle applies but at a larger scale. Wholesale firewood customers typically order considerably more — get in touch for a tailored quote based on your expected usage.
