Ecoal and Coffee Briquettes:Cleaner Alternative to House Coal, Jersey

If you've got a multi-fuel stove or an open fire and you want something other than logs for the colder nights, I've added two new fuels to the range: Ecoal and coffee briquettes. Both are smokeless-style fuels made from waste materials that would otherwise be thrown away, and both are delivered across Jersey in my electric van like everything else I sell.

What is Ecoal?

Ecoal is a coal alternative made from crushed olive stones, a natural waste product, pressed into hexagonal briquettes. The shape helps air move through the fire, so it lights easily and burns steadily.

The manufacturer says it produces up to 80% less smoke than house coal and up to 40% less CO2. Those are their figures, not mine, but it's easy to see why people are switching.

Good for: multi-fuel stoves and open fires, long steady heat, and anyone who wants less ash to clear out in the morning.

What are coffee briquettes?

Coffee briquettes are a smokeless-style fuel made in the UK from recycled coffee grounds. They are easy to light, low in ash and suitable for multi-fuel stoves, wood burners, open fires, chimineas and firepits. That last one makes them handy if you like an evening outside as well as in.

Is it all perfectly green? No solid fuel is. Anything you burn gives off CO2 and some smoke. What I like is that these briquettes give a waste product a second life.

Good for: a low-ash fuel that works indoors and out, and a smaller pack that's easy to handle.

Ecoal or coffee briquettes: which should I choose?

Here's how I'd think about it:

  • Multi-fuel stove, long overnight heat: Ecoal or Briquettes
  • Open fire, chiminea or firepit: coffee briquettes work well in all of them.
  • Not sure: get a bag of each and see which you prefer. I'm happy to talk it through.

Tips for burning briquettes

  • Use them in an appliance that's suitable for the fuel. Check your stove's manual if you're unsure.
  • Light them from below, on a bed of kindling - not using the top down method like lighting wood.
  • Don't overload the fire. Let air flow around the briquettes.
  • Keep them dry and covered until you need them.
  • Using Ecoal at the end of the night will keep your room warm into the next morning.
  • Perfect for when you know it's going to be a long day and evening in front of the fire.
