Buying Firewood in Jersey: What You Actually Need to Know

If you're new to buying firewood, or just new to buying it properly, a few things make a bigger difference than people expect — moisture content chief among them. Here's a straight answer to the questions we get asked most.
Why kiln dried matters more than "dry-ish"
Air-dried logs left in a shed can still sit well above 20% moisture content, even after years. Kiln drying forces that moisture out properly and consistently. The result: logs light faster, burn hotter (roughly double the heat output of normally seasoned wood, meaning you use about half as much for the same heat), and produce less of the tar-like residue that builds up in flues when damp wood burns. Ash, Oak or Birch — does it matter which you choose?
All three are hardwoods, so all burn well and produce good heat. The differences come down to burn characteristics: Ash and Oak are denser and split into larger pieces, so they burn slower and last longer — good for keeping a fire going. Birch has a papery bark that catches easily, making it the better choice for getting a fire started quickly.
For a log burner, a mix works well — Birch to get things roaring, then Ash or Oak to build heat and longevity. For an open fire, stick to the denser Ash or Oak, since you can't control airflow the way a stove allows, and a fire guard is worth having given Oak can occasionally spit as trapped air pockets heat up.
Note: we only supply hardwood — no softwood — and each net contains a single wood type, not a random mix, so if you order a mix of types you'll get an even split (with any odd one out determined by current stock).
What size are the logs, and how much do I actually need?
Logs are cut to roughly 25cm, sized for standard log burners, with thickness varying between 5–15cm. As a rough guide, 20 of our 30-litre nets is roughly equivalent to 1m³ or one builder's bag loose, and 60 nets (3m³) is about the same as a full lorry load. How long that lasts depends heavily on your household and how often you're burning, so if you're unsure, it's worth just asking rather than guessing and over- or under-ordering. Not ready to commit to a full order yet? A small trial delivery of 5 nets is available, and if you come back for more within 7 days you'll still get the bulk price on the larger order.
How delivery actually works
Everything arrives in easy-to-carry 30 litre nets, delivered by electric van and stacked exactly where you want it — never tipped on the driveway. If access is tight, a sack truck covers the rest of the way. You don't need to be home; just let us know somewhere safe and dry to leave it. Free delivery applies on orders over £50, with next-day delivery as standard and same-day where we're already in the area.

Payment options
Many ways to pay: BACS or Revolut transfer (details provided on your order confirmation), cash, card or cheque in person, an existing gift voucher, or a card payment link sent by email or text. No hidden GST or delivery costs on the advertised price — though sale items and discount codes are best paid by bank transfer, cash or cheque, since cards on those orders carry a small 2.5% fee to cover transaction costs.
Buying ahead for winter
You don't need to stock up out of fear of running out — we hold a large dry-storage capacity year-round. But there's a real advantage to ordering early: locking in today's price before any market movement, since firewood costs (like most things) aren't immune to wider world events.
