Ash, Birch & Oak Logs — Which Firewood is Best for Your Log Burner?
Share
When you're ordering kiln dried logs in Jersey, one of the first questions you'll face is which wood to choose. At Kiln Dried Logs Jersey we stock three premium hardwoods — ash, birch and oak — and each has its own characteristics. Here's everything you need to know to choose the right log for your fire.
Ash — the all-rounder
Ash is widely regarded as the finest firewood available and for good reason. It burns steadily and consistently, produces excellent heat output, and leaves minimal ash residue. Ash also splits cleanly, making it easy to handle and stack.
One of ash's biggest advantages is that it burns well even at slightly higher moisture levels than other hardwoods — though all our ash logs are kiln dried to under 20% so you'll always get the best performance. If you're looking for one wood to use all winter long, ash is the safest choice.
Best for: All round use, long burning sessions, overnight fires
Birch — the easy lighter
Birch is the go-to choice if you want a fire that catches quickly and burns brightly. Its natural bark contains oils that ignite easily, making it ideal for getting a fire going without much effort. Birch produces a lovely bright flame which looks great in an open fireplace or glass-fronted log burner.
The trade-off is that birch burns faster than ash or oak, so you'll go through logs more quickly. Many customers use birch to get the fire started, then switch to ash or oak once it's established.
Birch also has the most attractive appearance of the three — the distinctive white and silver bark makes it look great stacked next to your fireplace.
Best for: Getting fires started quickly, bright flames, open fireplaces, visual appeal
Oak — the long burner
Oak is the densest of the three hardwoods, which means it burns slowly and produces heat for longer. A well established oak fire can burn for hours, making it perfect for cold winter evenings when you want sustained warmth without constantly adding logs.
Oak does take a little longer to get going than birch or ash, so it's best added to an already established fire rather than used to start one. Once it's burning though, oak is hard to beat for sheer heat output and longevity.
Oak also produces beautiful glowing embers that retain heat long after the flames have died down — ideal if you want your room to stay warm through the night.
Best for: Long burning, maximum heat output, cold nights, sustained warmth
Which should you choose?
Here's a simple guide:
- Just starting out? Go with ash — it's the most forgiving and versatile
- Want easy lighting? Add some birch to your order
- Cold winter nights? Oak will keep you warmest for longest
- Best combination? Birch to start, ash or oak to keep it going
Many of our Jersey customers order a mix — birch & kindling to get the fire going, with ash or oak for the main burn. Our deals section has Mixed bundles that make this easy and great value.
